The officers were called to the Summit Drive home around 10:40 p.m., where the man had shot himself in the leg, Paramus Police Chief Robert Guidetti said.
Officers Nicholas Perna and Hugo Rodriguez forced their way into the home and applied a tourniquet to control bleeding, Guidetti said.
Officer Vincent Labarbiera then used Quick Clot to pack the entry wound and applied direct pressure, halting the bleeding until Paramus EMS arrived and transported the man to Hackensack University Medical Center.
Officer Nicholas Perna, an Emergency Services Unit officer, is trained in advanced bleeding control, including tourniquet application.
"Our department prioritizes training all officers in bleeding control techniques and basic first aid to ensure they have the skills necessary to save lives in critical situations," Guidetti said.
